Why Does This Keep Happening?
Have you ever noticed how easy it is to become consumed by something you don't want?
It could be a problem youâre experiencing now,
A situation youâre dreading,
A person you donât enjoying working with,
A âwhat ifâ scenarioâŚ.
It crowds out your thinking.
You discuss it over and over in your own head - and with anyone whoâll listen,
You analyse it to death - proâs and conâs, âwhat ifâ this, âwhat ifâ that,
You try to solve it,
You even try to protect yourself from itâŚ.using many weird and wonderful distractions, and yet somehow it seems to become an even bigger part of your experience.
âĄ
I was reflecting on this recently while watching a local issue unfold.
People had very strong opinions. Some for it, some against it.
What struck me wasn't who was right or wrong, but how much energy everyone was giving to the thing they didn't want.
It reminded me that this Universe operates by law.
"Like attracts like."
We attract what we're in harmony with, and what we consistently give our attention to tends to become a larger part of our experience.
When we donât want or like something and we push against it, weâre just giving more of our attention to it.
And attention is powerful.
Itâs easy to think that constantly focusing on a problem will somehow help sort it out and remove it from our lives.
But the very opposite occurs.
We become so familiar with the problem that we unknowingly align ourselves with it.
I think many of us do this every day.
We focus on being overwhelmed.
On not having enough time.
On what might go wrong.
On what we wish wasn't happening.
And slowly, without meaning to, we strengthen our relationship with the very thing we'd rather leave behind.
âĄ
One of the most powerful things we can do is notice what weâre giving our attention to, so that we can consciously choose what we align with.
Perhaps you've heard yourself say things like:
"I'm just not confident."
"People always let me down."
"Success is hard."
"I never follow through."
"I'm too old."
"It's too late."
The more repeatedly we give our attention to thoughts like these, the more aligned we become with the essence of what they represent.
âĄ
Hereâs a few questions I like to ask myself:
- What am I giving most of my attention to?
- What story am I telling about it and how does that make me feel?
- If I were to tell a different story, or focus my attention elsewhereâŚwhat else might become possible?
âĄ
Most times the challenge is that we are so immersed in our own habitual thinking that we can no longer see it clearly.
We keep carrying the same stories and coming up with the same conclusions.
Not because they're true, but because they've become familiar.
We recently held one of our Beautiful Retreats; for three days, we step away from the demands, responsibilities and noise that fill our lives.
Not to escape life. But to reconnect with it.
To become aware of what we've been carrying and believing, and to reconnect with what weâre truly here for.
Our next Beautiful Retreat will be held this October. If you feel to join us, please do.
âĄ
There is often far more possibility available to us than we've allowed ourselves to see and believe in.
And life has a remarkable way of growing whatever we consistently give our attention to.
Until next time, I encourage you to notice what you're giving your attention to, and to choose those things you want to grow more of.
With love,
