One Good Thing About Rock Bottom
Often, in the noise of daily life, it's easy to drift away from our true selves.
These letters are an invitation to pause for a while, reconnect with what you know to be true, and live a little more unapologetically you.

Things weren’t going as I wanted them to.
I was aware of the rumble inside me.
It had my attention, but not my buy-in.
I was standing, unmoving, observing the ship go down.
That’s one great thing about rock bottom…
it’s a rock-solid place to build from.
My resources were gone.
The road ahead looked bleak.
And my mind was awash with contrasting voices.
“I’ve been here before — I know what to do.”
“What a disaster! How could I let this happen?”
“Everything is always working out for me.”
“Do you really know what you’re talking about?”
I let the dust settle.
And then, in the silence, I said to myself:
“If you could do anything at all — anything — what would you choose to do?”
And then I listened.
Crickets.
Nothing was coming up.
Nothing except...
“I love this. This is what I’m here for.”
And slowly, the room of my mind began to fill with a united and clear voice.
“I want to go back to basics.
Shore up the footings.
Lay a solid foundation.
I know my stuff.
Build from here, and let every step be from my heart.”
Then one clear, singular thought landed.
I noticed it.
I took the step it suggested.
And that step revealed another.
And another.
Until, voilà! — I discovered the provision, right there and then, to keep going.

Life can be a hard hike at times.
And as I’ve moved about in our community this week, it’s been such a joy to see people, even when they’re in the messy middle, using what they now know to navigate through it.
Not avoiding it.
Not pretending it isn’t happening.
But finding the growth and, surprisingly sometimes, the joy that those times can bring.
As one member said to me this week:
“This has been a pattern for me… but now I know the practical steps to take to stop living that pattern, and instead… start living my passion!”
I think sometimes we can become so focused on explaining why something is hard...
“Because I was...”
“Because I had...”
“Because they didn’t...”
“Because I couldn’t...”
...that without realising it, we begin accepting what we don’t want.
We give all our attention to how we got here, rather than deciding what we’re going to do with what we have now.
And maybe what we have doesn’t look like much.
A desire.
A vision.
A little knowledge.
One idea.
One next step.
But perhaps that’s enough.
Things going “wrong” don’t prove there’s something wrong with us.
Most often they simply bring us face-to-face with who we really are, what we truly want — and whether we’re willing to step towards it, even when it feels uncomfortable.
The question isn’t “How did I get here?”
But more importantly “What do I have, right here, right now — and what can I build with it?”
Is there something in your life right now that isn’t going the way you want?
Instead of spending all your energy explaining why you’re here, perhaps ask yourself:
“What do I have here that I can build from?”
And then listen.
