When life says no

Life really does happen to reveal us to ourselves.

Today I had plans of driving down the coast to see a friend, and then sitting amongst nature and writing an inspired letter to you all.

It’s perfect weather…cool, overcast, rain…we’re in the last month of Autumn. I love driving the hills route with loads of trees, winding narrow roads and the peacefulness away from the city.

I was really looking forward to it.

It feeds my soul and I just love it.

I headed off.

First stop - fill up with petrol.

Also, check the tyres - it’s a longer trip than I usually drive.

All done…I was set to get going.

Then the thought entered;

Check the oil, …you’ve often had low oil.

“No, I’ll be good.” I thought. “The gauge will alert me if the car’s getting hot….”

Then the thought;

That temperature gauge hasn’t been moving …is it working?

I checked the oil which looked like it was very low…maybe even empty.

I shut the bonnet and messaged my partner for help, and also my friend - my ETA would be a little later than planned.

When I went to reopen my car bonnet, the lever broke off, leaving no way to open it.

I couldn’t deny it - I was being directed to stay put today.

“Noooooooooo! I really want to go!”

I could feel the very strong protest within me.

My phone rang; my friend was seriously unwell - today was a no-go.

I could feel the resistance in me - my unwillingness to just go with the direction which was unfolding.

♡

I often talk about faith. Faith to step into the unknown, faith to step forward in the direction we want to go, even when we can’t see further.

But faith is also useful in joyfully staying put when we have a plan that isn’t unfolding.

To wait patiently when we aren’t inspired to take action. All the while knowing we are part of a much larger tapestry…and it’s all working out.

As I sit writing this now, warm and comfortable, looking out at the deep colours of the trees as the rain steadily falls…I smile.

I don’t know why today was ‘not allowed’ to unfold as I’d planned.

I might never know.

But I do know I’m grateful for having noticed my inner resistance, for being aware of how that ‘need to control’ feels, and for being able to let go and enjoy this day …just as it was.

It’s worth reminding ourselves…resistance is the very frequency that repels what we're seeking.

We might be crystal clear on what we desire, and that clarity, while powerful, can easily turn into control.

Sometimes we’re holding our vision so tightly that it has no space to unfold.

Returning to Yourself
Just today I came across a piece of writing one of my daughters sent me a few years ago. She’d written an account of her thoughts and observations leading into an interaction we’d had a year after I began a new chapter in my life. Reading it again stirred my emotion, and my gratitude, for what she’d delivered to me that day. The account of events she’d written about was true. What hit me was ho...
Why Does This Keep Happening?
Have you ever noticed how easy it is to become consumed by something you don't want? It could be a problem you’re experiencing now, A situation you’re dreading,A person you don’t enjoying working with,A ‘what if’ scenario…. It crowds out your thinking. You discuss it over and over in your own head - and with anyone who’ll listen, You analyse it to death - pro’s and con’s, ‘what if’ this, ‘what ...
Will you allow it?
Can you remember being so excited as a child that you could barely sit still? That feeling of anticipation — it coloured everything around you, and you felt the lift inside you. As adults, it happens too… though perhaps, like me, you experience it a little differently now. This week, I had a restlessness I initially found quite annoying. I couldn’t seem to focus… but I didn’t feel like resting ...
