The Missing Link: The Gap Between Knowing & Doing
Jan 27, 2025Have you ever set a goal, felt inspired, and envisioned all the amazing ways your life would change once you achieved it? Yet, as the days roll on, you find yourself stuck, knowing what to do but not taking the necessary steps to do it? This is the knowing-doing gap, and it’s a challenge that keeps many people from transforming their dreams into reality.
Let me share a story that might resonate with you.
The Library of Knowledge That Didn’t Work
Years ago, I prided myself on being an avid learner. I read all the self-help books, attended every seminar, and soaked up knowledge like a sponge. My mind was a treasure trove of information about success, personal development, and goal-setting. Yet, there I was—still not achieving the results I wanted.
I vividly remember sitting at my desk one evening, staring at my list of goals. My vision was clear, my action steps were outlined, but something was missing. Despite all my knowledge, I felt paralyzed. That’s when I stumbled across a simple yet profound truth: our actions don’t come from what we know—they come from who we believe we are.
The real issue wasn’t a lack of information. It was a disconnect between my conscious mind (the part that plans and thinks) and my subconscious mind (the part that drives my actions). My subconscious was loaded with old beliefs: I’m not good enough. I’m not worthy. Success is for other people. These beliefs had been on repeat for so long that they felt like my truth.
The shift happened when I started working on my self-image and began emotionally embodying the version of myself who already had the success I desired.
Why We Stay Stuck in the Gap
The knowing-doing gap exists because we rely solely on our conscious mind, thinking knowledge alone will propel us forward. But the conscious mind is just the tip of the iceberg.
Your subconscious mind, often called the seat of action, holds the emotional and belief-based programming that dictates your behavior. If your subconscious beliefs don’t align with your goals, no amount of knowledge can move you into consistent action.
How to Close the Gap and Move into Action
Here are three powerful strategies to bridge the knowing-doing gap:
-
Shift Your Beliefs Beliefs are simply thoughts you’ve repeated so often that they’ve become ingrained in your subconscious. For example, if you believe, I’m not capable of running a successful business, you’ll unconsciously sabotage opportunities that could lead to success. To shift this, start by choosing a new belief, such as, I am fully capable of achieving my goals. Repeat it daily, visualize it, and allow yourself to feel its truth. Over time, your subconscious will accept this new belief.
-
Embody Your Vision Imagine yourself as an actor in a play. To play a role convincingly, you need to assume the position completely—not just in how you act but in how you think and feel. When you set a goal, begin thinking, feeling, and behaving as though you’ve already achieved it. Use your imagination to connect emotionally with your vision. The more you embody the version of yourself who has achieved your goal, the easier it becomes to take inspired action.
-
Engage Emotionally with Your Goal James Allen beautifully said, “You cannot move forward within and stand still without.” When you’re emotionally involved in your vision, action becomes effortless. Take time daily to immerse yourself in the feeling of your goal achieved. What does it feel like? What does your life look like? The more emotionally connected you are, the more natural it will feel to take the steps needed to make it a reality.
The Transformation
Once I began practicing these principles, everything changed. I no longer relied solely on willpower or intellect to move forward. I leaned into my subconscious programming and redefined who I believed I was. Goals that once felt out of reach became achievable. I went from dreaming about the life I wanted to living it.
The knowing-doing gap is not insurmountable. It’s an invitation to align your beliefs, emotions, and actions with your vision. By focusing on who you are being, rather than just what you know, you’ll unlock the power to create the life you’ve always dreamed of.
So, ask yourself: Who do you believe you are? And who do you need to become to achieve your goals? The answers lie within you.
